Note sur un graffito gallo-romain découvert au Mans (Sarthe)

This graffito, on a sherd of a Dressel 2/4 amphora ofthe Ist century AD, was discovered in Le Mans, in theprocess of the inventory of graffiti on Gallo-Roman pottery in the Sarthe department. It represents a sailing ship which can be charasterictically identified as a Ist century AD merchant vessel. It could be a casual drawing or an ex-voto. The findspot, in Le Mans - Vindinum, might reflect the maritime traffic which linked the Loire valley and the Roman world.

Ce graffito, réalisé sur un tesson d'amphore Dressel 2/4 du Ier siècle de notre ère, a été découvert au Mans, dans le cadre de l'inventaire des graffites sur céramiques antiques du département de la Sarthe. Il représente un navire sous voile qui, au vu de ses caractéristiques, peut être identifié comme un voilier de commerce du Ier siècle ap. J.-C. Il pourrait s'agir d'un simple dessin à caractère profane, ou bien d'un ex-voto. Sa localisation, au Mans - Vindinum, pourrait refléter les échanges maritimes qui unissaient le Val de Loire au monde romain.
