In this article, we propose to analyse how public walks in Paris and London in the eighteenth century defined these two cities and how French and English models influenced each other. By examining the introduction, the definition and use of these places, guided, in particular, by urban history archives and literary sources (travel guides), we will be able to report on the establishment of public walks in the urban framework of the eighteenth century, showing how they have become a factor in defining the modern city.

Dans le présent article, nous nous proposons d’analyser en quoi les promenades publiques à Paris et à Londres au XVIIIe siècle définissent ces deux métropoles et comment se dessinent des influences entre les modèles français et anglais. La fondation, la définition et l’utilisation de ces lieux, notamment à travers des archives d’histoire urbaine et des sources littéraires (guides de voyage) sera à même de rendre compte du processus d’implantation des promenades publiques dans le tissu urbain du XVIIIe siècle en montrant comment elles sont devenues un des facteurs de définition de la ville moderne.

In dit artikel analyseren we de manier waarop de openbare wandelplaatsen in Parijs en Londen tijdens de 18de eeuw deze twee metropolen hebben bepaald en hoe het Franse en het Britse model elkaar beïnvloedden. Door het onderzoek van stadsarchieven en literaire bronnen (reisgidsen) kunnen we nagaan hoe de stichting, de afbakening en het gebruik van die plaatsen het stadsweefsel van de 18de eeuw hebben vormgegeven en hoe ze één van de definiërende elementen van de moderne stad zijn geworden.
