Construction and Development of Waterways in the Netherlands (12th-16th Centuries). Some Landmarks. In face of a huge upsurge in the waterway traffic in the 13th and 14th centuries, substantial works to improve the navigability are undertaken in many regions. From the available literature but also from the regulatory sources, princely ordinances in this particular case, we attempt to draw the current state of research in actual, under construction or planned works in the Netherlands from the 12th to the 16th century, mainly in the counties of Flanders and Hainaut and in the duchy of Brabant.

Face à l’essor considérable de la circulation fluviale aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles, d’importants travaux pour améliorer la navigabilité s’effectuent dans de nombreuses régions. À partir de la littérature disponible mais aussi de sources normatives, les ordonnances princières en l’occurrence, est tenté un premier état des réalisations et des chantiers en cours ou projetés dans les Pays-Bas du XIIe au XVIe siècle, essentiellement dans les comtés de Flandre et de Hainaut et dans le duché de Brabant.

Aanleg en ontwikkeling van de waterwegen in de Lage Landen (twaalfde t. e. m. zestiende eeuw). Enkele mijlpalen. Gezien de enorme groei van het scheepvaartverkeer in de dertiende en veertiende eeuw, worden er belangrijke werken ondernomen om de scheepvaart te verbeteren in vele regio’s. Aan de hand van de beschikbare literatuur, maar ook van normatieve bronnen, namelijk de prinselijke verordeningen, wordt er geprobeerd om een eerste staat te maken van de bestaande werven, maar ook projecten in uitvoering of gepland in de Lage Landen van de twaalfde tot de zestiende eeuw, voornamelijk in de graafschappen Vlaanderen en Henegouwen en in het hertogdom Brabant.
