Gui de Dampierre, comte de Flandre et de Namur, eut seize enfants, issus de deux épouses différentes, Mathilde de Béthune, puis Isabelle de Luxembourg. Dans la mesure où cette importante progéniture servit pleinement les visées diplomatiques de Gui de Dampierre, le terme «politique matrimoniale » prend alors tout son sens. Celle qu’il mit en oeuvre s’étendit sur trois axes : d’emblée, lutter contre l’influence des Avesnes en Lotharingie et s’assurer de l’encerclement de la principauté épiscopale de Liège par des princes alliés ; plus tardivement, trouver des alliés dans sa volonté d’émancipation des interventions du roi de France Philippe IV ; et tout au long de sa vie, dénicher de riches héritières, pour installer confortablement sa nombreuse descendance, sans pour autant dilapider son propre patrimoine foncier.
