Pieter Pourbus’ Map of the Liberty of Bruges (1561-1571). An Overview of the State of Research

Cet article présente un état de la question à propos de la carte du Franc de Bruges peinte par Pieter Pourbus. Le «caractère unique» souvent revendiqué pour cette carte est utilisé comme point de départ pour explorer l’historique des recherches sur celle-ci. Dans un premier temps un pseudo «récit de voyage» nous permet de retracer comment la carte originale et sa copie sont arrivées jusqu’à nous. Ensuite, nous proposons un aperçu des principaux chercheurs et de leurs approches respectives. Ce faisant, nous nous posons la question de savoir «si» et «pourquoi» à ce jour, la carte a bénéficié de relativement peu d’attention de la part du monde académique. Nous analysons ensuite comment la carte du Franc de Bruges, ainsi que l’oeuvre cartographique de Pourbus dans son ensemble, s''enracinent à la fois dans l’art pictural et dans la technique de l’arpentage au XVIe siècle. Nous revisitons ensuite la classification moderne de la production cartographique du XVIe siècle. Nous donnons enfin un aperçu des caractéristiques techniques de la carte et lions à celles-ci une série de nouvelles questions pour constituer un programme de recherche actualisé.

Dit artikel geeft een status quaestionis van het onderzoek naar Pieter Pourbus’ geschilderde kaart van het Brugse Vrije. De dikwijls geclaimde ‘uniciteit’ van de map wordt als uitgangspunt gebruikt om de onderzoeksgeschiedenis naar de kaart te verkennen. Eerst trachten we met een zogenaamd ‘reisverhaal’ de overlevering van zowel de originele kaart én de kopie te reconstrueren. Vervolgens geven we een overzicht van de voornaamste onderzoekers en het onderzoeksperspectief dat ze hanteerden. Daarbij stellen we ons de vraag ‘of’ en ‘waarom’ de kaart tot nog toe relatief weinig aandacht uit academische hoek heeft gekregen. Daarna analyseren we hoe Pourbus’ kaart van het Brugse Vrije, maar ook de rest van zijn cartografisch oeuvre geworteld was in zowel de schilderkunst als de landmeetkunde van de zestiende eeuw. Daaraan gekoppeld problematiseren we de moderne classificatie van zestiende-eeuwse kaartproductie. Tot slot geven we een overzicht van de technische kenmerken van de kaart en koppelen die eigenschap met een reeks nieuwe vragen om zodoende tot een geüpdate onderzoeksagenda te komen.

This paper aims to bring a state of the art of the research into Pieter Pourbus’ painted map of the Liberty of Bruges. The often-alleged ‘unicity’ of the map is taken as a starting point to explore the state of research about this map. First, we try to reconstruct a so-called ‘travelogue’ and examine how the map and its copy were transmitted over the ages. Next, an overview of the main researchers and the prevailing perspectives is followed by the question if and why the map has received relatively little academic attention so far. Further, we analyse the way Pourbus’ map of the Liberty and his cartographic oeuvre at large, was rooted in both 16th-century pictorial art and land surveying, after which we problematize modern classifications of 16th-century mapmaking. Finally, we provide a summary of all the technical aspects of Pourbus’ map of the Liberty of Bruges and combine this with the proposition of a new research agenda with specific research questions.
