Hisayasu Nakagawa : The Three Pascals in Diderot's Thought. Pascal is a frequent référence for Diderot ; an analysis of the role he plays in Diderot's thought reveals three different Pascals. Diderot's earliest reaction is, on the one hand, hostility to the Jansenist Pascal and, on the other, admiration for the scientist and the polemicist. Gradually, however, there appears more sympathy for Pascal as a thinker, which can be linked to Diderot's concern for posterity. The debate with Falconet is also a dialogue with Pascal in which faith in the judgement of posterity, based on a wager similar to Pascal's, replaces Christian faith.
