Jean-Louis Fischer: Does the Encyclopédie contain a proto-science of monsters ? The Encyclopédie and the Supplément contains several articles devoted to monsters. Although teratology is not very developed in these articles, the authors are clear enough to give us an idea of their opinions concerning monstrous animal and human productions. These two works represent a "positive" period of teratology, or in other words a proto-science of monsters.
