Pierre Chartier : The Law ofthe Father (Part II). The first part of this article analysed how the Entretien d'un père avec ses enfants was elaborated between 1770 and 1773 and explained the methodological options of this study ; it then considered the "philosophical" purpose of the tale, in line with its subtile, On the Dangers ofputting oneself above the laws. This second part is devoted to the evening with the father around the provincial hearth ; the effects of "familiarity", the father's "confession", his all-important confrontation with his eldest son, the Parisian philosopher, are interpreted according to a two-fold expository scenario. The second of these scenarios borrows some notions from rhetorical psychoanalysis (metaphor-condensation, metonymy-deplacement, secondary processes, rationalisation) in order to try to pin-point the logic of a discussion in which the son, in a complex and ironical but controlled manner, confronts the longstanding (and fertile) dispute with his father, through the philosophical fiction represented by the tale. This is the price to pay so that the law of the father, which is also the law of this work over and above its transformations, can be reconciled with the law of the wise man.

La première partie de l'article, après avoir mis à jour les données de la genèse de l'Entretien d'un père avec ses enfants (de 1770 à 1773), et annoncé les choix méthodologiques retenus, a considéré l'enjeu « philosophique » de ce conte, ordonné selon le sous-titre : Du danger de se mettre au-dessus des lois. La deuxième partie s'attache à la soirée autour du père et du foyer provincial : les effets de « familiarité », l'« aveu » du père, sa confrontation privilégiée avec le fils aîné, philosophe parisien, ont été interprétés selon un double scénario d'énonciation. Le second de ces scénarios emprunte quelques notions à une psychanalyse rhétorisée (métaphore-condensation, métonymie-déplacement, secondarité, rationalisation) pour tenter d'apprécier au plus près la logique d'un entretien où le fils, de manière complexe, ironique mais maîtrisée, affronte par l'exercice de cette fiction philosophique qu'est le conte le lourd (et fécond) contentieux paternel. A ce prix, la loi du père, loi également de ce texte par delà ses transformations, peut ne pas s'opposer à la loi du sage.
