The federal priesthood of M. Bucc[... again

As presently restored, an inscription found at Upie attests that M. Bucc[, a notable of Lugdunum, was elected priest of the Three Gauls. Contrary to the arguments of L. Maurin, neither the date of tenure nor the gentilicium of the incumbent provides any obstacle to this hypothesis, which looks rather to be confirmed by the circumstance that the inscription was set up locally in the territory of Valentia, situated within Gallia Narbonensis. Despite his belonging to the colony of Lugdunum, there is no reason why M. Bucc[., a Romanized Gaul and in all probability a member of the civitas Segusiavorum, should not have been elected to the federal priesthood.

Selon les restitutions proposées, une inscription trouvée à Upie témoigne que M. Bucc[, un notable de Lugdunum, fut élu prêtre des Trois Gaules. Contrairement aux arguments avancés par L. Maurin, ni la date du sacerdoce, ni le gentilice du personnage ne font obstacle à cette hypothèse, qui semble plutôt renforcée par le fait que l'inscription a été érigée sur le territoire de Valence, en Gaule Narbonnaise. En dépit de son appartenance à la colonie de Lugdunum, il n'y a aucune raison pour que M. Bucc[, Gaulois romanisé et, selon toute vraisemblance, membre de la civitas Segusiavorum, n'ait pu être élu à la prêtrise fédérale.
