The vast majority of recent historical publications considers that Constantine became a catechumen shortly before his death, during a ceremony at Helenopolis (Vita C. IV, 61). This view that the emperor was lately admitted to the catechumenate can be traced back to the 17th century and to the French philologist Henri Valois. But the early admission of Constantine to the catechumenate is a hypothesis seldom put forward, and has never been considered in a particular and systematic study. This article will strive to demonstrate that Constantine, long before being baptized on his deathbed, was admitted to the catechumenate in the early years of his reign, thus becoming ritually a Christian.

Dans les publications récentes, les historiens considèrent majoritairement que Constantin est devenu catéchumène peu avant sa mort, à l’occasion d’une cérémonie célébrée à Hélénopolis (Vita C. IV, 61). Cette opinion attribuant à Constantin une admission tardive au catéchuménat remonte au XVIIe siècle et à Henri Valois. À l’inverse, la thèse d’une admission précoce de Constantin au catéchuménat, très rarement soutenue, n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une étude détaillée ni d’une argumentation systématique. Cet article s’efforcera donc de montrer que l’empereur, bien avant d’être baptisé sur son lit de mort, est devenu catéchumène dans les premiers temps de son règne.
