A historical Addendum to the episcopal Lists of Caria

In light of a recently published attempt to list all the episcopal hierarchy of the Ecclesia Orientalis, it seems more reasonable to the author to confine a similar project of his own to a smaller geography: that of Caria. The paper's aim lies mainly in its methodological approach to the theme, apart from complementing various gaps in the lists already produced. New disciplines have been called upon: epigraphy, sigillography, hagiography appear on the scene, and their support is not intended merely to supplement a name in a list, but rather to enlarge the historical parabola of the cities' s medieval development. Episcopal patronage becomes evident throughout the province until the 6th-7th cent., but thereafter the episcopal presence begins to fluctuate, a phenomenon which ends in the decay of urban continuity at many sites from the 10th cent, onwards.

Ruggieri, A historical Addendum to the episcopal Lists of Caria. — À la lumière d'une récente tentative d'établir la liste des évêques de l'Ecclesia Orientalis, il a semblé plus raisonnable à l'auteur de reprendre ce projet sur une aire plus restreinte : la Carie. Cette contribution vise à établir une méthode, tout en complétant les listes déjà données antérieurement. On a fait appel à de nouvelles disciplines : épigraphie, sigillographie, hagiographie. Leur apport ne sert pas seulement à compléter les listes, mais à offrir de plus larges perspectives sur le développement médiéval des cités. Le patronage episcopal apparaît clairement dans la province jusqu'aux 6e-7e siècles, mais ensuite la présence de l'évêque commence à fluctuer, phénomène qui s'achève dans la décadence de nombreux sites urbains à partir du 10e siècle.
