The issue of the authorship of the Synopsis Chronike and Theodore Skoutariotes

Following the publication of the edition of the chronicle Synopsis Chronike by C. Sathas as anonymous, Heisenberg attributed its authorship to Theodore Skoutariotes, bishop of Kyzikos. Although the identification has been readily accepted by scholarship, it is far from conclusive. Following an overview of the manuscript tradition of the text and a presentation of all the information that is known about the person of Theodore Skoutariotes, the article reconsiders the issue, by analysing and reassessing the relevant internal evidence, the life of Theodore Skoutariotes and the arguments of the secondary literature. At the end, it suggests that there is no sufficient evidence to establish the authorship of the text, and that the text should once again be considered as anonymous.

Après la publication de l’édition de la chronique intitulée Synopsis Chronikè par C. Sathas comme oeuvre anonyme, Heisenberg l’attribua à Théodore Skoutariotès, évêque de Cyzique. Bien que l’identification ait été facilement acceptée par les savants, elle est loin d’être concluante. Après un aperçu de la tradition manuscrite du texte et une présentation de toutes les informations connues sur la personne de Théodore Skoutariotès, l’article reconsidère cette conclusion, en analysant et réévaluant son évidence intrinsèque, la vie de Théodore Skoutariotès et les arguments de la littérature secondaire. Pour finir, il suggère qu’il n’y a pas de preuve suffisante pour identifier l’auteur du texte et que le texte devrait être à nouveau considéré comme anonyme.
