The Polish collapse : a possible solution. How is it that with undamaged productive capacity and sufficient factors of production to satisfy the basic needs of a population , of 36 millions, the Polish authorities have succeeded only in creating shortages at home, to say nothing of a grave and continuing imbalance in external trade ? Starting with the historical background to the crisis, the author goes on to examine the theoretical reasons for the economic collapse which Poland is at present undergoing. The country is no longer capable of meeting, by its own efforts, the effective demand of all those who are entitled to share in the distribution of the national product. This can only be due to insufficient development of production for the market in the face of what is doubtless excessive effective demand. The article concludes by making certain proposals for radical reform which, in the short term, as the author admits, could create fresh difficulties, but which in the end might well constitute the only solution.

Comment avec un appareil productif qui n'a pas subi de destructions, avec une masse de facteurs de production suffisante pour satisfaire les besoins les plus urgents d'une population de 36 millions d'habitants, n'arrive-t-on à créer que de la pénurie, sans compter un déséquilibre profond et durable des échanges extérieurs ? L'auteur entend reconstruire, en partant des causes historiques, le mécanisme théorique du désastre économique que subit à l'heure actuelle la Pologne. Le pays n'est plus capable de pourvoir par son propre effort productif à la satisfaction de la demande solvable de tous ceux qui, à un titre ou un autre, participent à la répartition de son produit national. Cela ne peut être dû qu'à un développement insuffisant de la production marchande face à un développement sans doute excessif de la demande solvable. L'article s'achève par des propositions de réforme en profondeur qui à court terme, l'auteur ne le cache pas, pourront provoquer de nouvelles difficultés mais où il voit la seule issue possible.
