This article deals with the places and functions of field training periods in the three experimental IUFM (Grenoble. Lille. Paris) and takes up the main elements of a research financed by the DRED and carried out during the year 1990- 1991. Starting from the actors' interventions and analysing the agreement and disagreement points, the author builds training patterns which permit to articulate and understand conflicts and tensions. These patterns are characterized by their different approach of the relation theory-practice : some are centered on theory and the training centre (the central line goes from theory to practice), others are centered on practice and field (the central line goes from practice to theory). The expressed positions result from the institutional complexity of IUFM's and put the problem of their ability to build a a new identity in which actors with different backgrounds will recognize themselves.

Cet article porte sur les places et les fonctions des stages sur le terrain dans les trois IUFM pilotes (Grenoble, Lille. Paris) et reprend les principaux éléments d'une recherche financée par la DRED et effectuée durant l'année 1990-1991. Partant du discours des acteurs et analysant les points d'accord et de désaccord, l'auteur construit des modèles de formation qui permettent d'articuler et de comprendre les conflits et tensions. Ces modèles se caractérisent par leur approche différente de l'articulation théorie pratique : certains sont centrés sur la théorie et le centre de formation (l'axe central va de la théorie vers la pratique), d'autres sont centrés sur la pratique et le terrain (l'axe central va de la pratique vers la théorie). Les positions énoncées découlent de la complexité institutionnelle des IUFM et posent le problème de leur capacité à construire une identité nouvelle où se reconnaîtront des acteurs aux trajectoires différentes.
