Le nom exclusivement thasien Παιέστρατος , connu à partir du IVe s. av. n. è. et jusqu’à l’époque impériale, avec ses deux variantes phono­ graphiques Παέστρατος , puis Παίστρατος , suscite la curiosité : faut­il y voir un composé à rection verbale progressive fait sur le verbe παίω «frapper » avec στρατός «armée » comme complément ? Mais quel sens culturellement plausible aurait pu prendre un tel syntagme ? L’hypothèse proposée ici est d’analyser Παιε ­ comme la rémanence du thème de présent aussi attendu phonétiquement sous la forme παίω (
