Résumé En It Fr

The Chisone Valley in Piedmont : Emigration, Land and Industrialisation (1850-1914). Paola CORTI and Ada LONNI Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, temporary migration was an important factor in the economic and social life of many Italian frontier communities located in the Alpine valleys. This phenomenon, which persisted in some of these areas, even after the development of local industry, had for many households the function of supplementing income from agriculture and work in factories. This study examines two Piedmont communities located in the Waldension valleys. The period considered covers the years of the first industrialisation of the area. Seasonal migration of workers over the frontier dated back to the Ancien Regime. Earnings from this activity, combined with agriculture and work in the local silk and cotton mills, were the main source of income for households in these communities up until at least the outbreak of the first World War.
