Die Deutsch-Kanadier, Genese einer Identität Manuel Meune In diesem Beitrag sollen einige Merkmale der Bevölkerung deutscher Abstammung in Kanada dargestellt werden. Unübersehbar sind ihre Bemübungen, sich eine Geschichte wie die der « Gründer-Völker » (Engländer und Franzosen) zu geben, entweder indem sie « Urmythen » verwenden oder die « ewigen Werte des Deutschtums » heraufbeschwören. Allerdings kann man feststollen, daß ibre Suche nach einer spezifischen Identität innerhalb des heutigen Kanadas durch eine zum Teil ausgebliebene Vergangenbeitsbewältigung erschwert wird, und daß das Verschweigen bestimmter Aspekte der Nazi-Zeit das Aufkommen eines starken Geschichtsbewußtseins verlangsamt. Die Deutsch-Kanadier neligen auch dazo, ein verzerrtes Bild der aktuellen Wirklichkeit der kanadischen Gesellschaft zu haben : sie spielen nämlich den Bikulturalisrous, d.h. die Rolle der Beziehungen zwischen Franko- und Anglo-Kanadier herunter und überhören das Bedürfnis Quebecs nach Anerkennung, in der Hoffnung, daß der in der Verfassung werankerte Multikulturalismus, ihren Interessen mehr entgegcakommt.

Obviously, the German-Canadians produce big efforts to create their own history, similar to the one of the « founding-nations » (French- and English-Canadians), either in using « archaic myths », or in evoking « eternal German values ». Nevertheless, their search for a specific identity within Canada of nowadays is complicated by the lack of a proper « digestion » of their history. For example, the hide of certain aspects of the nazi-period is disturbing the growth of a strong historic consciousness. The German-Canadians also tend to have a distorted image of the actual reality in Canada : they aren't just playing down the biculturalism, the importance of the relationship between French- and English-Canadians, they also don't set great store by Quebec's need of aknowledgment, hoping that the multiculturalism, which is guaranteed by the Constitution, will better protect their interests.

Les efforts qu'elle met en œuvre, pour se créer une histoire digne de celle des peuples fondateurs (Anglais et Français) sont manifestes, qu 'il s'agisse du recours à des mythes fondateurs ou de l'évocation des « valeurs éternelles de la germanité ». On constate toutefois que la quête d'une identité spécifique au sein du Canada d'aujourd'hui est compromise par l'inachèvement du « travail » sur le passé récent de l'Allemagne, et que le silence sur certains aspects du nazisme rend difficile l'émergence d'une conscience historique forte. Les Germano-Canadiens tendent également à avoir une vision tronquée de la réalité actuelle, celle de la société canadienne, en minimisant le biculturalisme, l'importance des relations entre francophones et anglophones, et le besoin de spécificité du Québec, dans l'espoir que le multiculturalisme, ancré dans la constitution, sera plus propice à leurs intérêts.
