From Fedj to Social Worker : the Metamorphosis of a traditional Role among Ethiopian immigrants in Israel Haïm ROSEN This paper looks at the current efforts of key individuals within the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel to assist in the adjustment and integration of new immigrants. The material that is presented comes from fieldwork carried out in the town of Ashdod. The findings are presented against the back-drop at the kinds of local level political activity that was taking place in Ethiopia, and was familiar to these immigrants prior to their arrival in Israel or Ashdod. A central finding of the research is that a transformation can be said to have taken place, whereby the kinds of expectations once held of a person who served in a traditional role known as fedj, representing people and handling their affairs for them, have been placed upon certain individuals who are working in the area of social services. A case study is made of the « metamorphosis » of one individual in particular who managed to go from acting in a fedj-like manner, as he performed his official functions, to becoming a certified social worker in charge of a large staff and organizer of a program to train a new generation of local people to serve their community like a good fedj.

De Fedj à assitant social : la métamorphose d'une fonction traditionnelle parmi les immigrants éthiopiens en Israël Haïm ROSEN Cet article examine les efforts actuels d'individus-clés au sein de la communauté juive éthiopienne en Israël qui aident dans l'adaptation et l'intégration des nouveaux immigrants. Le matériel qui est présenté est issu d'un travail de terrain mené dans la ville d'Ashdod. Les résultats sont présentés par rapport aux divers types d'activités politiques locales qui étaient en vigueur en Ethiopie et avec lesquels les immigrants étaient familiarisés avant leur arrivée en Israël. Une des conclusions centrales de cette recherche est qu'une transformation a eu lieu, par laquelle les fonctions attendues jadis d'un individu qui jouait un rôle traditionnel connu sous le nom de fedj, représentant certaines personnes et s'occupant de leurs affaires, sont à présent projetées sur certains individus qui travaillent dans la sphère des services sociaux. Une étude de cas a été conduite sur la « métamorphose » d'un individu en particulier, qui a pu, en se comportant comme un fedj et en exécutant ses fonctions officielles, devenir un assistant social diplômé, à la tête d'une large équipe et l'organisateur d'un programme pour former une nouvelle génération de juifs éthiopiens capables de servir leur communauté comme un bon fedj.

El material presentado viene de estudios de terreno cumplidos en la ciudad de Ashdod. Los resultados están presentados en el contexto de los esquemas locales de actividad política que conocían estos inmigrantes en Etiopia antes de su llegada a Israel. El resultado central de esta investigación es que se puede decir que hubo una transformación por la cual ciertos papeles, asumidos antes por una persona tradicional llamada fedj que representa las personas y que trata de sus negocios, son ahora tratados por individuos que trabajan en el sector de los servicios sociales. Un caso ejemplar representa esta « metamórfosis », un individuo en particular logró pasar de una forma de actuar de tipo fedj cuando empeñaba funciones oficiales al cargo de trabajador social titulado. Esta hoy a la cabeza de un personal numeroso y organiza a un programa de formación para una generación de judíos etíopes que servirán su comunidad como buenos fedj.
