Résumé En

Summary: Our knowledge of the early history of the telephone has been enriched by research carried out during the seventies by Yves Stourdzé. Since then various monographs, of which a synthesis is presented here, have enabled us to trace a geography of this technical development and of the birth of the concept of networks. Did the emergence and development of new uses of the telephone follow a model which was specifically French? What was the role played by public authorities and by eminent members of society? A more global answer to questions such as these is being provided by renewed research on the subject.
