Uromastix acanthinurus is an heliothermic lizard living in the Sahara desert. Its activity and its behavioural thermoregulation in a temperature gradient in the laboratory are shown to be similar to those recorded in the field. Its experimental thermal preferences closely correspond with its activity temperatures in its natural environment. According to external conditions (light or darkness), Uromastix acanthinurus may choose a given temperature range within the gradient. At night this lizard is inactive and its body temperature usually falls to that of the environment. Uromastix acanthinurus seems to deliberately seek out a cold environment to spend the night, though a warmer area may be available.
