Im Glanz des Anderen : Boxen, wie man seine Fremdheit verspürt Ausgehend von der Ethnografie einer Gruppe von Boxern untersucht dieser Text das kämpferische Engagement als Erfahrung der Konfrontation mit dem Anderen, deren Gründe und Wirkungen den eigentlichen Ring überschreiten. Durch die Untermalung der Kampfgestik mit den Worten der Kämpfer beschreibt der Artikel die Kampffiguren aus der Dichte der biografischen Lebensläufe heraus. Gemeinsamer Nenner ihrer Vitae ist die Erfahrung als Einwanderer, bei der jeder auf seine Art die Spuren seiner Konfrontation mit der Fremdheit trägt, die als eine soziale Disqualifizierung der Andersartigkeit verstanden wird, die jeder im Innersten seiner Verletzungen erlebt. In der Art eines abgesplitterten Stücks des Anderen im eigenen Fleisch erscheint dieser, lange bevor sie sich Mann gegen Mann mit dem Gegner messen, als wichtigster symbolischer Grund für das Verständnis der Kampfpraxis.

The fragment of the Other : boxing as an experience of foreignness Taking the ethnography of a group of boxers as a basis, this text examines the commitment to fight as an experience of confronting the Other, where reason and effect go beyond the mere frame of the boxing ring. The article sheds lights on gesture through the fighters’ words, offering a description of boxing figures detailed through the density of biographical backgrounds. Brought together through the experience of immigration, all these life histories bear the mark of a confrontation with foreignness, understood as being a form of social disqualification of otherness, experienced in the very wounds it generates. Like a fragment of the Other anchored in the flesh of the boxers well before they enter the adversity of a physical fight, this otherness stands at the forefront of the symbolic reasons that can help us understand why boxers fight.

À partir de l’ethnographie d’un groupe de boxeurs, ce texte interroge l’engagement pugilistique comme expérience d’un affrontement à l’Autre dont les raisons et les effets dépassent le seul cadre du ring. Éclairant le geste par la parole des pugilistes, il propose une description des figures de la lutte travaillée dans la densité des parcours biographiques. Réunis par l’expérience de l’immigration, ceux-ci portent chacun à leur manière l’empreinte d’une confrontation à l’étrangeté entendue comme une disqualification sociale de l’altérité éprouvée dans l’intimité de ses blessures. À la façon d’un éclat de l’Autre ancré dans la chair des boxeurs bien avant qu’ils ne se livrent à l’adversité du corps-à-corps, cette dernière apparaît dès lors au premier rang des raisons symboliques permettant de comprendre la pratique du combat.
