Can one Define Codification ? The purpose of this contribution is to put forward several thoughts which may assist in the search for a true definition of codification. This definition is hard to find because it is in itself extremely relative, each attempt at codification having to be viewed in its own context. It is, nevertheless, important to enquire into the object, method and rationale of codification. If the common objective of any codification is to rationalise, to simplify law, then the object and the methods differ. There remains nonetheless an interaction between the common and diverse elements of all codification.
