About Gertrude Stein : the Dreamed Translation. To translate Gertrude Stein does not mean necessarily translating the meaning, which is meant to be elusive, but reproducing, somehow, a dramatic effect, an emotional affect. In some of Stein's writings, translation is at work in the original text itself, through playing with two languages at once. People's names are a separate problem : how do they « translate » ? And how do you translate the sound of the voice into writing, or an American voice into a French voice ? To accept the fact of not understanding everything may be one of the unobtrusive tasks of the translator, together with trying not to be in the way. Maybe the impossible model is that of a love relationship.
