Revisionist and post-revisionist criticism in the U.S. has striven to re-Americanize the Transcendentalists, by describing them both as the heirs of Puritanism and as the founders of the American Renaissance. This essay offers a new revision of a kind, which is based on two propositions : 1. Emerson's — and his disciples' — view of history is, in many ways, a form of « romantic paramnesia » ; 2. the romantic opposition of myth vs. history enabled them to develop a strategy of disengagement which is in line not with Puritan orthodoxy, but with the antinomian and separatist tradition.

La critique révisionniste et post-révisionniste aux Etats-Unis a prétendu rendre le Trancendantalisme à l'Amérique, en faisant de ses membres tout à la fois les héritiers du Puritanisme et les fondateurs de la Renaissance Américaine. Cet essai propose en quelque sorte une nouvelle révision à partir de deux propositions : 1. la vision de l'histoire d'Emerson et de ses disciples est, à bien des égards, une forme de « paramnésie romantique » ; 2. grâce au romantisme, ils ont pu opposer le mythe à l'histoire, et développer une stratégie du désengagement qui s'apparente non pas à l'orthodoxie puritaine, mais à la tradition antinomienne et séparatiste.
