In The Bonfire of the Vanities (1988), Tom Wolfe issued a personal evaluation on the state of the American society of the 1980's : a dual society, torn apart between its rich and its poor, whose middle-class had lost its status and, as if « frozen in an iron cage », had ceased to perform the mediating function that the founding myths of the United States had ascribed to it. Focusing on the text of a writer who never ceased to view himself as a « new journalist », and « the witness of his time », this essay attempts to analyse the patterns and consequences of the vanishing of a « center », which had ensured the political, economic and social balance of the American nation.

Dans Le Bûcher des Vanités (1988), Tom Wolfe porte un diagnostic très personnel sur l'état de la société américaine des années 80 : société duelle, écartelée entre ses riches et ses pauvres, où la classe moyenne, « mise en cage », semble avoir perdu tout prestige et être devenue ainsi incapable d'assurer le rôle médiateur que lui avaient fait jouer les mythes fondateurs des Etats-Unis.
