Résumé
This essay reconsiders the function of the double ending in Hemingway's short story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro, " by focusing on point of view and the subtle play on enunciation, as well as the ambivalent use of symbolism in the text. The analysis proceeds from the riddle of the leopard of the epigraph and relates it to the italicized flashbacks and the oxymoric ending of the short story to reach a tentative solution in terms of metafiction.
