Résumé En

American evangelicalism constitutes a major cultural force in the evolution of the United States in the 19th century. Its roots lie in the evangelical revivalism that emerged in the Anglo-Saxon world in the 18th century. From the First Great Awakening (1740-1742) through the alliance of religion and patriotism during the Revolution, then through the Second Great Awakening (ca. 1800- ca. 1840), evangelicalism became the dominant religious discourse of the new nation in its popular, institutional and radical aspects.
