Pupils and grammatical notions Papers reported in this special issue are essentially reprints of communications written for the « Language analysis » workshop of the symposium on French (mother tongue) teaching and didactics which was held in Paris in December 14th-17th, 1983. The findings of these reports show that children facing grammatical analysis tasks develop problem solving processes. This is an evidence of metalinguistic skills practises by children and of progressive refinement presented by the notions. Authors collaborating to this issue are :
