Through the analysis of a set of research dealing with foreigners children at school this paper reports the development of an ethnographic approach focusing on the problems of « traditional » research. The author was induced to reappraise methodological difficulties reshape classifications and work hypotheses. This text is concerned with the study of some problems that foreign pupils are facing at school (especially coping with time table) and classroom interaction analysis. The author assesses what can be expected from the ethnographic approach.

Cet article (1) présente ce qu'on pourrait appeler la construction progressive d'une approche ethnographique, à travers l'analyse d'un ensemble de recherches (2) portant sur les enfants d'étrangers à l'école. Des problèmes posés par des recherches organisées d'une façon traditionnelle et m'ont amenée à réviser des difficultés méthodologiques très concrètes et m'ont conduite à reformuler les hypothèses de travail et les catégories employées.
