Introduction to a discussion on the new working class, Gérard Adam The results of the survey on The French Worker in 1970 allow a number of hypotheses connected with the idea of the "new working class" to be put to the test. To what extent are young people, technicians and, more generally, workers in expanding sectors responsible for formulating an ideology of self-management and outlining a strategy more radical than that of the traditional elements in the worker movement? That the results are open to more than one interpretation is a consequence, on the one hand, of the difficulty of finding a strict definition of this "new working class" and, on the other hand, of the low correlation between the supposed new forms of behaviour and the opinions held by those answering the accepted description of the "new working class". Dans quelle mesure les jeunes, les techniciens et d'une façon plus générale, les travailleurs des secteurs de pointe formulent-ils une idéologie autogestionnaire et esquissent-ils une stratégie plus radicale que les éléments traditionnels du mouvement ouvrier ? Les résultats sont nuancés qui tiennent, d'une part à la difficulté de définir rigoureusement cette "nouvelle classe ouvrière", et d'autre part à la corrélation faible entre les comportements nouveaux supposés et les opinions des éléments répondant aux caractéristiques retenues de la "nouvelle classe ouvrière".
