PIERRE RENOUVIN AND POLITICAL SCIENCE, by JEAN-BAPTISTE DUROSELLE For Pierre Renouvin, historian, what sort of relationship should history have with political science ? Certainly one of dependence since in his opinion there coul be no political science without history or, to be more precise, without the data with which history provides the political scientist. In fact, through his enlightened scepticism with regard to political science, Pierre Renouvin condemned the now widespread tendency to speculate upon abstractions representing concrete phenomena before these concrete phenomena have been studied in depth. Lastly, to see political science only as present-day history, lacking in scope and neglected, was to reassert the superior and demanding conception of history that Pierre Renouvin professed throughout his work. History is much more than a science ; it is the instrument which provides the human sciences with the raw material that they must shape to their own ends. Certainement une relation de dépendance car il ne pouvait y avoir selon lui de science politique en dehors de l'histoire, plus précisément en dehors des données fournies au politologue pour l'histoire. En fait, à travers ce scepticisme éclairé à l'égard de la science politique, Pierre Renouvin condamnait la tendance, si répandue de nos jours, à spéculer sur des abstractions représentant des phénomènes concrets avant que ces phénomènes concrets n'aient été étudiés en profondeur. Finalement, ne voir dans la science politique qu'une histoire d'aujourd'hui, petite et mal aimée, c'était réaffirmer la haute et exigeante conception de l'histoire que Pierre Renouvin professa à travers son œuvre : l'histoire, bien plus qu'une science est l'outil qui fournit aux sciences humaines la substance, qu'elles doivent modeler selon leurs propres fins.
