IN SEARCH OF A NEW WORLD ECONOMIC ORDER. GREAT BRITAIN: RELUCTANT PARTICIPATION, by FRANÇOISE DE LA SERRE The initial reticence regarding the objective of a new international economic order has now given way in London to numerous statements in favour of greater independence between the industrialized and the developing countries. Despite a few initiatives however — of which the most spectacular is the proposal for a general agreement on commodities — British policy is directed more towards modifying the existing system than reforming international economic relations as a whole. From this point of view, the measures taken to counter the recession and the maintaining of a sufficient volume of world trade are more important than a reorganisation of the monetary system, while a strategy based on trade and multilateral aid is preferred to a more far-reaching change in structures. LA GRANDE-BRETAGNE : UNE PARTICIPATION RÉTICENTE, par FRANÇOISE DE LA SERRE Les réticences initiales concernant la recherche d'un nouvel ordre économique international ont fait place aujourd'hui à Londres à de nombreuses déclarations en faveur d'une meilleure interdépendance entre pays industrialisés et pays en voie de développement. Mais, en dépit de quelques initiatives — dont la plus spectaculaire est la proposition d'un accord général sur les produits de base — la politique britannique tend davantage vers un aménagement du système existant que vers une réforme d'ensemble des relations économiques internationales. Dans cette optique, la lutte contre la récession et le maintien d'un volume suffisant d'échanges mondiaux l'emporte sur une refonte du système monétaire tandis qu'une stratégie fondée sur le commerce et l'aide multilatérale tient lieu de réforme de structures plus radicale.
