COMMUNIST MILITANTS IN PARIS: MILITANT PRACTICES FRANÇOIS PLATONE and FRANÇOISE SUBILEAU Two types of militant practice form the content of a quantitative description of the Paris Communist militants who met in section conferences in October 1974 : attendance at Party schools and militancy in organizations — union or otherwise — outside the PCF (French Communist Party). The dual responsibility for educating militants and training officials which devolves upon the Party schools is reflected in the increased « school enrolment » of new militants and the close relationship between school attendance — above all federal and central — and the exercising of responsibilities in the Party. The rate of union membership among Communist militants is very high, whatever the socio-occupational category. The inequalities which are found — particularly the lower rate of union membership among young workers — are mainly due to the working environment. Lastly, it would seem that militancy inside the Party and inside the unions and rank and file organizations is not mutually exclusive, so that the idea of militant specialization can be dismissed — at least as regards the population considered. LES MILITANTS COMMUNISTES A PARIS : PRATIQUES MILITANTES, par FRANÇOIS PLATONE et FRANÇOISE SUBILEAU Deux types de pratiques militantes ont pu faire l'objet d'une description quantitative chez les militants communistes de Paris réunis en conférences de section en octobre 1974 : la fréquentation des écoles du parti et le militantisme dans des organisations — syndicales ou autres — extérieures au PCF. Le double rôle d'éducation des militants et de formation des cadres dévolu aux écoles du parti se traduit par l'intensification de la « scolarisation » des nouveaux militants et par la forte relation qui existe entre la fréquentation des écoles — surtout fédérales et centrales — et l'exercice de responsabilités dans le parti. Le taux de syndicalisation des militants communistes est très élevé, quelle que soit la catégorie socio-professionnelle considérée. Les inégalités constatées — et notamment la moindre syndicalisation des jeunes ouvriers — sont essentiellement dues au milieu de travail. Enfin, il apparaît que le militantisme au sein du parti et au sein des syndicats et des organisations de masse ne s'excluent pas mutuellement, ce qui conduit à écarter, au moins pour la population étudiée, l'idée d'une spécialisation des militants.
