Résumé En Fr

Uncertain democracy. Rational choice theory and democratization in latin America The rational choice approach, while neither specific nor totally new in the Latin American field, is increasingly used by political scientists. This research strategy is part of a paradigmatic change in which macro-oriented approaches, focused on objective conditions, are replaced by pluralist approaches, which emphasize political variables and stress individual actors. Based on the assumption of imperfect rationality, rational choice research has underlined the problem of the uncertainty inherent to democratizations. While keeping at a distance from voluntaristic analyses, it has above all developed the idea that the actors could take advantage of the uncertainty, thus opening the way to approaches more probabilistic than deterministic.
