The new cleavages in Belgian-Flemish politics All the analyses of the postwar Belgian political system, especially in Flanders, highlight -the role of three cleavages : economic, ideological or philosophical, and communitarian. Studies of the rise of the new parties (the Greens and the Far Right) and of increased voter mobility show that the pattern of cleavages outlined for the postwar period is in full flux. A study of the new cleavages of the Belgian-Flemish political space, carried out on a representative sample of Flemish voters, aged 18 to 65, after the 24 November 1991 elections, indicates that the materialist/postmaterialist split identified by R. Inglehart is clearly present. Nevertheless, R. Inglehart's theory does not suffice to describe the Flemish electoral space. A « universalist cultural opening/particularist cultural withdrawal » cleavage also has a significant influence on voting behavior.
