The second round decision [in the french 1997 parliamentary election] : a close outcome The second round of the parliamentary elections was marked by the return of the left/right opposition and by the growing presence of the National Front, which weighed on the outcome of the election. The left won an absolute majority of seats with a minority of votes. The Socialist Party did defeat the RPR and the UDF in the matches in which there were only two can­didates. The triangular elections, with the National Front present, had a high cost for the incumbent majority, but they do not fully explain its defeat. It remains that in its third parlia­mentary victory since 1981, the left's electoral base is increasingly small. The left has a minority of votes even in the "decisive round".

Le second tour des élections législatives est marqué par le retour à l'affrontement gauche/droite, mais aussi par la présence croissante du Front national qui pèse sur l'issue du scrutin. La gauche enlève la majorité absolue des sièges avec une minorité des voix. Toutefois, le Parti socialiste devance le RPR et l'UDF dans les duels qui les opposent et les triangulaires avec le Front national, si elles ont coûté cher à la majorité sortante, ne suffisent pas à expliquer sa défaite. Reste que pour sa troisième victoire législative depuis 1981, la gauche possède une base électorale de plus en plus réduite et est minoritaire même au « tour décisif».
