: The article gives an overview of the development of transalpin transports, characterised by the geography of the first railway tunnels at the end of the 19th century establishing important commercial links between Italy and Northern Europe. With a tremendous growth of transport after the sixties and with the opening of the highway tunnels negative effects became more and more obvious and the transport problems raised many objections and still remain a central issue in international, national and regional debates. Consequendy, the new infrastructures face not only technical but also economical and ecological challanges. Without complementary political strategies they are hardly apt to integrate the international with the regional (alpine) transportation networks in order to rescue the Alps — a fragil ecosystem and place of recreation — from a rapidly growing wave of traffic. Keeping the conflictual interests in the realm of transport and mobility in mind, no easy and reductionist solution can be thought of.
