: Mountains between nature, history and social systems. This text analyses the proposals of participants attending the IMRW concerning the double status of mountains as both a natural and socio-cultural «object». It focusses on the difficulty of understanding the same object from three different viewpoints, as seen in the approaches adopted by naturalists, by those involved in the use and management of such areas for social, economic, and cultural purposes, and by public authorities. Even though the reference is often the same, the diversity of the approaches, analyses, and possible recommendations clearly illustrates the complexity of mountains as an object of knowledge. The author thinks that one of the common characteristics of most of the scientific approaches used in studying this object is to identify and propose solutions to « problem » situations.

: Ce texte analyse les propositions des participants au SIRM visant à alimenter la réflexion sur la double statut naturel et socioculturel de la montagne. Il met l'accent sur la difficulté qu'il y a à concevoir un même objet sous trois angles différents: celui des approches naturalistes, celui des modes sociaux, économiques et culturels d'utilisation et de gestion et celui des interventions publiques. Si le réfèrent est souvent le même, la diversité des approches, des diagnostics et des éventuelles préconisations montre à quel point il s'agit d'un objet complexe de connaissances. L'auteur pense dès lors qu'un des caractères communs de la plupart des approches scientifiques conduites sur cet objet est d'identifier et de contribuer à solutionner des situations à « problèmes ».
