: Mountain lands: regions of refuge or ecosystems for humanity? The article develops the point of view of a Mexican economist and an American anthropologist specialising in Oceania regarding the conditions of conducting scientific research and the impact of such research in very specific cultural environments. Both authors observe that there is considerable disparity between the objectives and methods used by scientists and government and inter- government institutions on the one hand, and those of local populations on the other. Under these conditions, they propose that scientists adopt a more critical attitude with respect to the approach and methods they use. They recommend that greater consideration be given to the legitimate rights of local populations concerning subsistence, autonomy and management of their natural environment.

: Ce texte développe le point de vue d'un économiste mexicain et d'une anthropologue américaine spécialiste d'Océanie vis à vis des conditions d'exercice et de l'impact de la recherche scientifique dans des milieux culturels très spécifiques. Tous deux font le constat d'un grand décalage entre les objectifs et les modes d'intervention des scientifiques et des institutions gouvernementales et intergouvernementales d'une part et ceux des populations locales d'autre part. Dans ces conditions, ils invitent les scientifiques à adopter une attitude critique à l'égard de leur propre démarche et de leurs méthodes. Ils prônent la prise en compte des droits légitimes des populations locales en matière de subsistance et d'autonomie en matière de gestion de leur environnement naturel.
