Shortly after the meeting of the "Trente Council ", the missionary effort of the Church asserts itself through an increased centralisation which will benefit Rome and by the concentration of the means on a long strip of land which stretches from Italy to the Flanders : spiritual strategy line like this " dorsale catholique " is also a place for ideological exchanges and theological creation. At the same time the cults of intercession are seen as the complete expression of the dogma of the Saints' communion, that is to say of universal solidarity. Finally, the educational pastoral knows — thanks to books, to schools, to imagery and to works of art — an unprecedented development.

Au lendemain du concile de Trente, l'effort missionnaire de l'Église s'affirme par une centralisation accrue au profit de Rome et par une concentration des moyens Sur une longue bande territoriale étirée de l'Italie aux Flandres : ligne de stratégie spirituelle, cette « dorsale catholique » est aussi un lieu d'échanges idéologiques et de création théologique. En même temps, les cultes d'intercession sont conçus comme l'expression accomplie du dogme de la communion des saints, c'est-à-dire de la solidarité universelle. Enfin la pastorale éducative connaît, grâce au livre, à l'école, à l'image et à l'œuvre d'art, un essor sans précédent.
