In einer kurzen bibliographischen und chronologischen Untersuchung behandelt der Aufsatz wichtige Etappen der Produktion von Katechismen, katholischen wie protestantischen. In der Frühzeit -16 Jh.) stehen Deutschland und Italian im Vordergrund, aber sehr bald verlagert sich der Schwerpunkt nach Frankreich und auf die Britischen Inseln. Der Aufsatz beleuchtet ferner die Ausfuhr der Katechismen, ihre Verbreitung und schliesslich ihre Herstellung in der Neuen Welt (Kanada, USA). Dabei werden zwei Aspekte sichtbar : einerseits zahlreiche Anleihen und Anpassungen, die sich nicht auf einzelne Lander und Sprachen beschränken, andererseits die identitätsstiftende Rolle, die Katechismen spielten, indem sie Nationalismus und kulturellen Partikularismus förderten.

This article, in the form of a brief biblio-chronological survey, evokes a number of important dates in the history of the production of catechisms, both Catholic and Protestant. The initial period (the 16th century) inevitably focuses on Germany and Italy, but France and the British Isles soon became the major and indispensable sources of such works. Having considered the period in which catechisms originated, the article draws attention to the export, reception and finally the production of catechisms in the New World of Canada and the United States. Two major points arise from this survey. It indicates the parameters of a complex network of borrowings and adaptations which extended beyond particular areas and languages. By evoking certain debates, it also gives a glimpse of the identify-forming role of the production of these catechisms in defending or promoting different nationalisms or cultural particularisms.

À travers une courte enquête biblio-chronologique, le présent article évoque quelques moments importants de l'histoire de la production des catéchismes, tant catholiques que protestants. L'époque des origines (XVIe siècle) passe nécessairement par l'Allemagne et l'Italie, mais rapidement la France et les Iles britanniques deviennent les théâtres majeurs et incontournables de telles productions. Après avoir évoqué ce temps des origines européennes, l'article attire l'attention sur l'exportation, l'implantation et finalement la production des catéchismes dans le Nouveau-Monde tant canadien qu'états-uniens. Ce parcours met à jour deux aspects majeurs. Il fournit les balises d'un réseau complexe d'emprunts et d'adaptations qui débordent les territoires et les langues. Il laisse entrevoir, par l'évocation de certains débats, le rôle identitaire qu'on pu jouer ces productions de catéchismes en soutenant et en promouvant des nationalismes et des particularismes culturels.
