Noch vor kaum zwanzig Jahren hielt man erne solche Studie für « verfrüht » (Maurice Crubellier). Trotzdem rührt das Interesse an diesem Thema aus jener Zeit. Innerhalb weniger Jahre schritt die Forschung voran, zunächst auf dem relativ bescheidenen Niveau der Abschlussarbeiten für die « maîtrise » im Anschluss an die « licence ». An Bearbeitern für solche Themen mangelt es nicht, ebensowemg an Zeitzeugen. Aber die Erfahrung zeigt, dass es unabdmgbar ist, die Ermnerung der Älteren mit den Dokumenten der Zeit zu konfrontieren, insbesondere für die Periode von 1940 bis 1944. Mehrere Studientage und Kolloquien wurden dazu abgehalten. Nun ist es an der Zeit, den Forschern Hilfsmittel und erste Darstellungen an die Hand zu geben. Sie sollen es erlauben, nicht nur einzelne Organisationen isoliert zu betrachten und sich auch nicht auf einfache Erzählungen zu beschränken. Es steht ausser Zweifel, dass die Älteren, die von dieser Bewegung geformt wurden, einen beträchthchen Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft insgesamt und das religiöse Bekenntnis im besonderen ausgeübt haben.

Two decades ago, the study of such a subject appeared 'premature' (Maurice Crubelher). But the birth of interest in it dates from around then. Within a few years, research took off, initially at the rather modest level of master's dissertations following the licentiate in history. Candidates for these dissertations are not lacking, nor are the (oral history) witnesses. But experience shows that it is indispensable to check the memories of former members of the organisations against the documents of the period, especially for the war years Study sessions and conferences followed on from there. It is now time to assist scholars by publishing research guides and syntheses of work aready done. That should enable the subject to progress beyond the particularism of individual organisations and the simple narrative. There is no doubt that the people formed by these. movements exercised a considerable influence on society in general and on religious confessions in particular.

En peu d'années la recherche a pris son essor, tout d'abord au niveau relativement modeste des mémoires de maîtrise faisant suite à la licence d'histoire. Les candidats pour de pareils sujets ne manquent pas, les témoins non plus. Mais l'expérience montre qu'il est indispensable de confronter la mémoire des anciens aux documents du temps, en particulier pour la période 1940-1944. Journées d'études et colloques se succèdent. II convient maintenant d'aider les chercheurs en publiant des guides de recherche et de premières syntheses. Ceci doit permettre d'aller au-delà du particularisme des organisations et de dépasser le simple récit. Nul doute que les anciens formés par les mouvements aient exercé une influence considérable sur la société en général et les confessions religieuses en particulier.
