Die Depeschen der päpstlichen Gesandten in Frankreich (Nuntien, Legaten a latere seit dem 16. Jahrhundert gehen über den gewohnten Rahmen der Diplomatie hinaus und sind eine bedeutende Quelle für die Rehgionsgeschichte Frankreichs. Eine moderne Edition wurde bereits vor dem Ersten Weltkneg in Angriff genommen, aber nur wenige Bände gelangten in den Druck. Zu Beginn der 60er Jahre wurde die Reihe der Acta nuntiaturae gallicanae aus der Taufe gehoben, herausgegeben von der Ecole française de Rome und der Gregoriana: Sie umfasst bislang sechzehn Bände für die Jahre 1535 bis 1689, allerdings mit grossen Lücken im 17 Jahrhundert. Eine Fortführung dieser Publikation für das 18. bis frühe 20. Jahrhundert ist wünschenswert, erfordert jedoch angesichts der Besonderheiten dieser Quellengattung neue Editionskriterien.

The despatches of the papacy's envoys to France (nuncios and legates a latere) from the sixteenth century onwards extend well beyond the bounds of conventional diplomacy and are an important source for French religious history. In our own time, the publication of these documents was initially undertaken by the Archives religieuses de la France up to World War I, but only a few volumes were actually printed. The great Acta Nuntiaturae Gallicae collection, a product of collaboration between the Ecole française de Rome and the Gregorian University, began m the early 1960s, and numbers at present 16 volumes dealing with the period 1535 to 1689, but with serious gaps for the 17th century. The desirability of continuing their publication for the 18th century and into the early 20th century nevertheless requires a redefinition of the criteria of publication first laid down for the early modern period so as to take account of the specific characteristics of the documentation itself.

Les dépêches des envoyés pontificaux en France (nonces, légats a latere) depuis le XVIe siècle dépassent le cadre habituel de la diplomatie et sont une source importante pour l'histoire religieuse de la France. A l'époque contemporaine, leur édition a d'abord été entreprise dans le cadre des Archives religieuses de la France avant la première guerre mondiale mais seuls de rares volumes ont pu être imprimés. Le grande collection des Acta nuntiaturae gallicae, fruit de la coopération de l'Ecole française de Rome et de l'Université grégorienne, est née au début des années 1960 et compte aujourd'hui seize volumes qui portent sur la période 1535-1689 avec de fortes lacunes pour le XVIIe siècle. L'extension souhaitable de cette publication en série aux fonds du XVIIIe siècle jusqu'au début du XXe siècle implique cependant une redéfinition des critères d'édition élabores au départ pour l'époque moderne afin de tenir compte de la spécificité de cette documentation.
