Maurice Causse : Paul Sabatier and the Franciscan Question. Does the Speculum Perfectionis really date back to the period following St Francis' death in 1226, or is it merely a sixteenth century compilation ? Franciscan critics have unanimously come down in favour of the latter solution on the grounds of the priority of the Scripta Leonis, and in particular the Perugian Legend discovered in 1922. Paul Sabatier was alone in arguing that the Speculum Perfectionis was prior to the Perugian Legend. His death in Strasbourg in 1928 prevented him from setting out his motives. The present study offers four new types of argument to back his thesis.

Le Speculum Perfectionis est-il, ou non, un document proche de la mort de Saint François en 1226, ou seulement une compilation du XIVe siècle. La critique franciscaine unanime a opté pour la seconde solution, se fondant sur la priorité des Scripta Leonis, notamment la Légende de Pérouse découverte en 1922. Seul de son avis, Paul Sabatier affirmait la priorité du Spéculum Perfectionis sur la Légende de la Pérouse. Sa mort à Strasbourg en 1928 l'empêcha de fournir ses raisons. La présente étude donne quatre ordres d'arguments nouveaux en faveur de sa thèse.
