Même s’il lui arrive de s’emporter contre la multiplication incontrôlée de la production imprimée et contre les imprimeurs qui défigurent ses textes, Luther voit dans l’innovation de Gutenberg essentiellement un ultime don de la grâce divine, destiné à favoriser la diffusion de l’Évangile. Pour le Réformateur, qui se singularise par une grande attention pour la production matérielle de ses textes, l’imprimerie s’inscrit dans le plan général de la Providence, dans la perspective de la lutte entre le Christ et Satan et dans celle de l’histoire du Salut de l’homme.
