Penelope's cloth. Was there an Orphic myth of Dionysos and the Titans ? Brisson and Edmonds have recently questioned the existence of the Orphic myth of Dionysus and the Titans in antiquity. A new examination of relevant texts (presented at the end of the paper) establishes that this myth is not a 19th century construction, but it comes from Ancient Greece. Each of the authors dealing with this myth presents a different aspect of the paradigm, but none of them adds elements incompatible with the reconstructed paradigm which has remained coherent through time. It must therefore reflect a religious movement covering many centuries. Besides Orphism, which other equally long-lasting candidates are there ?

Luc Brisson et Radcliffe Edmonds ont récemment douté de l'existence du mythe orphique de Dionysos et les Titans dans l'Antiquité. Un nouvel examen des textes pertinents (présentés dans un dossier joint) porte à la conclusion que ce mythe n'est pas une construction du XIXe siècle, mais qu'il provient de la Grèce ancienne. Les différents auteurs qui parlent du mythe puisent à tour de rôle dans les différents éléments de son paradigme, mais ils n'ajoutent jamais des éléments incompatibles avec le schéma retracé, qui a gardé sa cohésion en tout temps. Il doit donc répondre à un mouvement religieux d'une longue durée lui aussi. Quel autre candidat d'une aussi longue durée pourrions-nous trouver en dehors de l'orphisme ?
