No Grail for the Wandering Jew. The Jew in XXth century Grail Novels At the end of the XlXth century, when the myth of the Holy Grail revived in Western Europe, it came back with a puzzling antagonism against the Jew - that Middle Ages literature had never known. Was it conjonctural or structural ? In the XXth century literature, the Jew and the Grail are still opposite figures. Studying contemporary Grail novels which provide positive Jewish characters is helpful for interprating such an antagonism. The impossible communion of the Jew at the Holy Grail is properly mythical. Thus is shown the opposition between transcendence and incarnation, achieved and unachieved redemption. The Holy Grail may be the unjewish part of christianism.

À la fin du XIXe siècle, lorsque le mythe du Graal ressurgit en Europe occidentale, il s'accompagne d'un curieux antagonisme avec la figure du juif, d'autant plus troublant qu'il n'était pas présent comme tel au Moyen Âge. S'agit-il d'un trait conjoncturel ou structurel ? L'étude des œuvres du XXe siècle montre que perdure de l'incompatibilité entre juif et Graal ; pour l'interpréter, on accorde une attention particulière aux quelques romans du Graal contemporains comprenant des héros juifs positifs. L'impossible communion du juif au Graal se révèle en définitive proprement mythique, et elle nous révèle l'opposition entre transcendance et incarnation, rédemption accomplie et inaccomplie. Et si le Graal était ce qu'il y a de non juif dans le christianisme ?
