The Pearl - between ocean and sky : origins and evolution of a Christian Symbol Fascinating symbol because of its beauty, endowed with a mysterious and creative power, the pearl is the attribute of the great fertility goddesses of Antiquity. In Christian symbolism it has become the emblem of the Christ, his virginal birth and the most perfect evocation of the kingdom of Heaven. In addition to this new symbolism there is a gnostic dimension, visible in texts written in syriac by Christian authors, undoubtly influenced by Mandaean and Manichaean beliefs which had also lifted this symbol to the highest level of their tenet of salvation.

Symbole fascinant par sa beauté, et doté d'une puissance mystérieuse et créatrice, la perle est l'attribut des grandes divinités antiques de la fertilité. Dans la symbolique chrétienne, elle est devenue l'emblème du Christ et de sa naissance virginale, et la plus parfaite évocation du royaume des cieux. À cette nouvelle symbolique va s'ajouter une dimension gnostique, perceptible chez des auteurs chrétiens de langue syriaque, sans doute influencés par les croyances mandéennes et manichéennes qui ont aussi élevé ce symbole au plus haut rang dans leurs doctrines du salut.
