Confessors and inquisitors in modem Italy : final considerations In the sixteenth century, in Italy a precious investigation means for bishops and inquisitors was the refusal to absolve the faithful who, during confession, accused themselves of a sin/crime against the faith without having first denounced themselves and their accomplices to a judge of the Holy Office. Nonetheless the actual effectiveness of this new mechanism all through the Modern Age is doubtful. The study of various unpublished documents coming mainly from the archives of the Roman Inquisition and the Congregation of Bishops and Regulars proves that in Italy the aim to guarantee the freedom and ease of confession prevailed over the needs of the Holy Office.

Le refus d'absoudre les fidèles qui s'accusaient en confession d'un péché/délit contre la foi s'ils ne se présentaient pas auparavant à un juge du Saint-Office pour se dénoncer eux-mêmes et dénoncer leurs complices garantit aux évêques et aux inquisiteurs, dans l'Italie du XVIe siècle, un instrument d'enquête précieux. Il existe pourtant, pour toute l'époque moderne, des doutes sur l'efficacité réelle de ce nouveau mécanisme. L'examen de nombreux documents inédits, provenant surtout des archives de l'Inquisition romaine et de la Congrégation des Évêques et des Réguliers, montre que l'objectif de garantir la liberté et la facilité de la confession prévalut en Italie sur les exigences du Saint-Office.
