SUMMARY. — This article is an introductory essay to the correspondance between Dedekind and Keferstein ; the latter makes here an analysis of the cardinal concepts of chain and infinite which have both been thought out, so as to solve the problem of the construction of the (entire) series of whole numbers, while avoiding the interference of alien or no-standard elements. Precisely because he sees the possibility of obtaining, while leaving aside certain precautions, a series where N is merely a part, Dedekind seems above all concerned with stressing the conditions which ensure that his construction process will provide an absolutely « classical » « pattern » of arithmetics.

RÉSUMÉ. — L'article est une présentation de la correspondance de Dedekind avec Keferstein qui en analyse les concepts cardinaux de chaîne et d'infini, tous deux élaborés de manière à résoudre le problème de la construction de l'ensemble des entiers naturels en évitant l'intrusion d'éléments étrangers ou non standards. Justement parce qu'il aperçoit la possibilité d'obtenir, en négligeant certaines précautions, un ensemble dont N n'est qu'une partie propre, Dedekind est avant tout préoccupé de souligner les conditions qui garantissent que son procédé de construction fournit un « modèle » absolument « classique » de l'arithmétique.
